Extend your export insurance and Green Card during the Italian process
Waiting for the VAT check, an STA appointment or a revisione in Italy? Extend your export insurance online by 14 days at a time from €120. You pay after we confirm, and the new Green Card usually arrives within 15 minutes of payment.
The Italian registration of a Dutch car often takes longer than the 14 days of the original export insurance. You can extend the cover online, without visiting our desk in Hengelo, by 14 days at a time and after approval by the insurer.
Extensions start from €120 per 14 days. The price can be higher for heavy or unusual vehicles, and we always confirm it before you pay.
With an extension you receive a new Green Card, also as a PDF by email.
Why export insurance often needs extending for Italy
Several Italian steps can take more time than planned: the VAT check at the Agenzia delle Entrate, an appointment at an STA (Sportello Telematico dell'Automobilista), obtaining a CoC or another technical document, a sworn translation, or a revisione or visita e prova. Transport can be delayed, or the buyer may not be ready yet. The order of the Italian steps is on importing a car to Italy. An extension does not speed up any of these steps, but it keeps the vehicle insured while you wait.
How an export insurance extension works
You send the request by WhatsApp, email or the form on this page.
We check it and ask the insurer for approval.
We confirm the approval and the price.
You pay by bank transfer.
You receive the new insurance certificate with Green Card by email, including a PDF, usually within 15 minutes of payment.
If the insurer does not approve, you pay nothing. This also works if your current export insurance was arranged elsewhere: we then arrange follow-on cover. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days and each time after approval by the insurer. In some cases a discount is possible for several vehicles or a long-term working relationship; that is always agreed in advance.
Extending Green Card cover: send these five details
The registration number.
The current Green Card or policy, as a photo or PDF.
The end date of the current cover.
Where the vehicle is now and where it is going.
Details of the policyholder and the driver.
The form has no upload field: use the WhatsApp button next to the form to send photos and documents, or send them by email.
Limits of an insurance extension: the export plate period and APK
The extension only concerns the insurance. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never after the APK (the Dutch roadworthiness test) has expired; that stays the same. The export registration itself is not extended; see Dutch export plates.
In Italy the Italian rules apply, and the rules for a Dutch export plate vary by country. Check them before you drive on after the first 14 days. We cannot promise that driving in Italy on export plates is allowed, certainly not for a resident of Italy.
Expired cover or a vehicle still in the Netherlands
Apply in time, so that the new cover follows directly on the old one. If the cover has already expired, an extension may still be possible, for example when the vehicle has a valid APK or roadworthiness test, again after approval by the insurer. Between the end of the old cover and the start of the new one, the vehicle is uninsured and may not be driven. An extension is also possible at our desk in Hengelo; you then usually receive the Green Card document within about 15 minutes. The policy and the Green Card determine in which countries and for which driver you are covered.
Is the vehicle still in the Netherlands and are the 14 days over? Then it can only be moved on a trailer or car transporter. More about the original cover is on export insurance for Italy, and questions can go to our export desk.
Export insurance extension
from €120 per 14 days
14 extra days of third-party liability cover
New Green Card by email (PDF), usually within 15 minutes of payment
Request online, or at our desk
Also if your current export insurance was arranged elsewhere
Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
Every extension needs the insurer's approval, and you only pay once we have confirmed that approval and the price. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. If your cover has already expired, an extension is still possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) or technical inspection, again subject to the insurer's approval. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle must not be driven.
The extension covers the insurance only, not the export registration. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is located apply. The policy and Green Card state which countries and drivers are covered.

Extending export insurance for Italy: approval, payment, limits
How often can I extend the export insurance?
More than once if necessary, 14 days at a time, each time after approval by the insurer. Approval is not automatic, so apply in good time.
My export insurance was arranged elsewhere. Can you extend it?
Yes, we can arrange follow-on cover for 14 days, after approval by the insurer. Send us the current Green Card or policy and its end date.
Does extending the insurance also extend my export plates?
No. The extension covers the insurance only. On Dutch roads the 14 days after deregistration and the APK limit still apply, and abroad the rules for export plates vary by country.
When do I pay for the extension?
Only after we have confirmed the insurer's approval and the price. You pay by bank transfer, and the new Green Card usually follows by email within 15 minutes of payment.
Starting prices, including VAT where applicable. Outside office hours, depending on the vehicle or for postal delivery the price can be higher; we always confirm it in advance. See all prices
